Switching distances (transfers)

Registered for the 5K but feeling the 10K? When an event allows it, you can move your registration to a different distance yourself — no emailing the race director.

Where to find it

Open My Registrations and look for a Transfer button on the registration you want to move. It appears only when all of these are true:

  • The event has turned transfers on.
  • The transfer window is still open — before the cutoff the director set, or before the race starts if no cutoff was set.
  • The registration is for the current edition of the event and hasn't been canceled.

If you don't see a Transfer button, the event doesn't offer self-serve transfers — contact the race director instead.

How a transfer works

  1. Pick your new distance

The transfer window lists every distance in the event with its current price. Options you can't move to are grayed out with the reason — sold out, outside the age range, or a distance you're already registered for.
  2. Review the cost

You'll see the price difference and any transfer fee as a subtotal before you commit. A $0 subtotal transfers free with no payment step at all.
  3. Pay (if anything is owed)

Paid transfers go through the same secure checkout as a registration, and the exact total — including the processing fee — is shown before you pay.

What it costs

  • Moving to a pricier distance: you pay the difference between the new distance's current price and what you already paid for your entry.
  • Moving to a cheaper distance: the difference is not refunded — you keep your spot at the new distance, but no money comes back.
  • Transfer fee: some events charge a flat change fee, set by the director. It's shown up front in the transfer window.
  • Processing fee: added on top whenever you're paying anything, just like a normal registration. If nothing is owed, nothing is charged.

Moving into a team distance

If the distance you're moving to is a team event (a relay, for example), you'll create a team or join one with its invite code as part of the transfer — the same choice you'd make registering for it fresh. Moving out of a team distance removes you from your old team.

What happens after

  • Your registration moves to the new distance right away and updates in My Registrations.
  • Any bib number you already had is released back to the event — you'll get a bib for your new distance whenever the event assigns them.
  • If you were placed in a start wave or heat, that assignment is cleared so the event can re-place you for the new distance.

If the confirmation takes a moment

Once your payment goes through, the move itself usually lands in seconds. If the window says your transfer is still being finalized, it will complete on its own — don't pay again. Check My Registrations in a minute.
